Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Taylor Potts threw for 457 yards and seven
touchdowns, as the Texas Tech Red Raiders rolled past the Rice Owls, 55-10, in
non-conference play at Jones A&T Stadium.
Potts completed 36-of-57 pass attempts for the Raiders (2-0), who were coming
off a 38-13 trouncing of North Dakota State in last week's season opener. Lyle
Leong pulled in nine balls for 117 yards and three touchdowns, while Tramain
Swindall posted six receptions for 123 yards and a pair of scores.
The Owls (0-2) used three different quarterbacks in the game and they combined
for 25-of-41 pass attempts for 197 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
John Thomas Shepherd had the most success of the trio, as he engineered both
scoring drives for Rice and finished 14-of-19 for 109 yards and a touchdown.
The Raiders took a 14-0 lead after one period of play, as Potts threw a five-
yard touchdown pass to Edward Britton and a seven-yard strike to Leong in the
Rice got on the board in the second quarter behind a 45-yard field goal by
Clark Fangmeier and that accounted for the only points of the frame.
Texas Tech took over after half and scored three touchdowns in the third
quarter to grab a 35-3 lead. Potts hooked up with Leong from eight and 11
yards out and in between those touchdowns he hit Austin Zouzalik from 11
yards away for a score.
The Raiders made it 28-unaswered points when Eric Stephens pulled in a 34-yard
touchdown pass from Potts early in the fourth quarter.
Rice stopped some the bleeding for moment with a three-yard touchdown pass
from Shepherd to Taylor Dupree.
Texas Tech, however, responded with a pair of touchdowns passes from Potts to
Swindall. He first connected with Swindall from 30 yards and then from 26 to
complete the 55-10 trouncing.
On the night, Texas Tech rolled up 560 yards of total offense while limiting
Rice to just 257 yards.
