Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Robert Griffin III threw for 136 yards and ran for 41 more, as the Baylor Bears held on to beat the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 24-21, in a non-conference showdown at BB&T Field.

Griffin III, who threw for more than 2,000 yards and rushed for over 800 in 2008 as a freshman, completed 15-of-24 throws for one touchdown in the victory. Jay Finley headed the Bears (1-0) with 91 rushing yards on 14 carries, while David Gettis pulled in five passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.

For Wake Forest (0-1), Riley Skinner hit on 20-of-31 pass attempts for 143 yards and a pair of scores, but he was also intercepted three times. As a team, the Deacons managed just 269 yards of total offense and committed four turnovers.

It took the Bears less than four minutes to strike, as Griffin III completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Gettis to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive. Ben Parks nailed a 22-yard field goal late in the period and Baylor held a 10-0 lead.

Wake Forest scored the only points of the second quarter when Mike Rinfrette rumbled two yards to paydirt midway through the frame.

Baylor struck less than two minutes into the second half, as Kendall Wright scurried 37 yards for a touchdown. Wideout Ernest Smith than connected with Lanear Sampson from 33 yards away, giving the Bears a 24-7 advantage.

With 10 seconds left in the third quarter, Skinner threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Devon Brown for Wake Forest. The touchdown finished a 10-play, 80-yard drive that pulled the Deacons within 10 points.

Skinner brought Wake Forest even closer following a five-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Parker with just under four minutes to play. The Deacons, however, wouldn't threaten again in the setback.

Baylor posted 197 yards on the ground, averaging 5.3 yards per carry, as it improved to 5-1 all-time versus Wake Forest.
