Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Sam Bradford returned to the field after missing
the last three games with a sprained right shoulder joint and threw for 389
yards and a touchdown, as 19th-ranked Oklahoma routed Baylor, 33-7, in a Big
Bradford, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, who had been out since a season-
opening loss to BYU, completed 27-of-49 passes. Chris Brown rushed for 70
yards on 19 carries and a pair of scores for Oklahoma (3-2, 1-0 Big 12), which
rebounded from a 21-20 loss at Miami a week ago.
"It's extremely gratifying just to get back out on the field," said Bradford.
"Just to be out there with the guys that I have put in so much work with in
the offseason and just the simple things like handoffs. Everything out there,
it's just exciting to be back."
DeMarco Murray gained 113 yards on the ground on 24 touches and Brandon Caleb
had seven catches for 139 yards for the Sooners. Adron Tennell chipped in with
a TD catch late in the fourth quarter and Jimmy Stevens converted on all four
field goal attempts in the win.
The victory, Oklahoma's school-record 27th in a row at home, served as a
prelude to the big matchup the Sooners have next week against Texas in the
annual Red River Rivalry.
Nick Florence passed for 220 yards on 22-of-41 attempts with a TD and a pick
for Baylor (3-2, 0-1), which had won its previous two games. Ernest Smith had
six grabs for 71 yards, while Andrew Judy had a scoring catch in defeat.
After a scoreless first quarter, Oklahoma got on the board near the midway
point of the second when Brown ran it in from a yard out to finish off a 12-
play, 80-yard drive.
"I think we're going to get better as an offense every week," added Bradford.
"I still feel like our receivers made some great plays today. I love the
energy they played with today, they were flying around, made a lot of
downfield blocks and sprung some runs for us. I'm sure we're going to
eliminate some of those drops going down the road but I thought they played
Then following a three-and-out by the Baylor offense, the Sooners struck
again. Bradford led his squad down to the Baylor 12 after completing three
straight passes, including a 49-yarder to Caleb before Brown found the end
zone on a four-yard run with 3:48 left in the half.
The Bears would get seven points back quickly, going 59 yards on six plays in
1:34 as Florence connected with Judy for a three-yard score to make it a 14-7
game. OU was unable to answer late in the quarter and maintained a seven-point
advantage heading into the break.
Stevens' 35-yard effort with 5 1/2 minutes gone in the third quarter,
stretched the Sooners' advantage to 10. Stevens then connected from 25 yards
away and on a 21-yarder on OU's next two series to take a 23-6 lead after
After another failed Baylor offensive set early in the fourth quarter,
Bradford guided the Sooners to a 1st-and-goal situation on the BU eight.
However, the offense again sputtered and Oklahoma had to settle for a 24-yard
Stevens effort with a little over 10 minutes to play.
Bradford hit Tennell with a three-yard TD pass to finish off a 13-play, 74-
yard drive with 4:03 left in the game.
"As far as the fourth quarter goes, it was extremely disappointing," said
Baylor coach Art Briles. "I really thought that our guys played tonight with a
tremendous amount of effort, confidence and belief. And quite honestly we
didn't do a very good job offensively the second half maintaining any type of
rhythm. That's what we have to do a better job as an offense is stop the ball
and run it down."
The Bears visits Iowa State next week...OU improved to 19-0 in the all-time
series between the two schools...Bob Stoops' teams are 62-2 at home and the
Sooners have won 46 of their last 47 on Owen Field.
