Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Jeremiah Masoli threw for 163 yards and ran for
another 84 and a touchdown, as the Oregon Ducks defeated the Purdue
Boilermakers, 38-36, in a non-conference bout at Autzen Stadium.
With record-setting running back LeGarrette Blount no longer on the Ducks
(1-1) roster, Masoli has the athleticism to pick up some of the slack in the
running game. His 84 rushing yards were a team-high, while Blount's
replacement, redshirt freshman LaMichael James, logged 56 yards on nine
Purdue (1-1) quarterback Joey Elliott threw for 266 yards and a touchdown,
though he was also intercepted twice. Ralph Bolden carried 29 times for 123
yards and two scores, while Aaron Valentin paced the receiving corps with
eight catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Elliott was intercepted on the Boilermakers' second drive of the game, which
led to a 28-yard field goal for Oregon kicker Morgan Flint to put the Ducks on
Purdue answered with a six-play, 70-yard drive, resulting in a five-yard
touchdown run by Jaycen Taylor at the 8:17 mark of the opening quarter.
But Oregon marched right back down the field, and Andre Crenshaw crossed the
goal line on a two-yard run to reclaim the lead for Oregon.
The Ducks' lead lasted until the opening minute of the second quarter, when
Purdue's Ralph Bolden scored on a 19-yard run.
The seesaw continued with about four minutes to play until halftime, as
Oregon's Walter Thurmond returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown to
give the Ducks a 17-14 lead.
Purdue kicker Carson Wiggs tied the score at 17-17 on a 23-yard field goal on
the final play of the first half.
The Boilermakers put together a five-minute drive on their opening possession
of the second half, and Bolden scored on a one-yard run.
Oregon's Bryson Littlejohn tied the score at 24-24 when he scooped up a fumble
and returned it 28 yards to pay dirt at the 5:06 mark of the third quarter.
Three minutes later, the Ducks scored again, this time on a 15-yard scramble
by Masoli to put Oregon on top, 31-24.
Purdue came right back and scored on a 22-yard pass from Elliott to Bolden
early in the fourth quarter, but the extra-point attempt was blocked and
Oregon maintained a one-point lead.
The Ducks extended their lead to 38-30 on a 21-yard touchdown run by Kenjon
Barner with 6:42 to play.
The Boilermakers cut the deficit to 38-36 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Keith Smith to Aaron Valentin, but they weren't able to come up with the two-
