South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Jimmy Clausen threw for 246 yards and two
touchdowns to lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 20-16 win against the
Boston College Eagles in non-conference action at Notre Dame Stadium this
Clausen converted 26-of-39 passes for the Irish (5-2) as they won for the
fourth time in five games and also snapped a six-game slide in the series with
Boston College (5-3). Golden Tate reeled in 11 passes for 128 yards and both
TDs for the Notre Dame offense, while the defense stepped up in the second
half and recorded a trio of interceptions, two by Kyle McCarthy.
The Eagles, losers of two of their last three outings, were paced by
quarterback Dave Shinskie who hit on 17-of-35 passes for 279 yards and a
score, but was also guilty of those three critical picks as well. Rich Gunnell
caught 10 of those passes for a game-high 179 yards and a touchdown.
The scoring was slow going early in the contest as kicker Nick Tausch put the
home team on top with a 37-yard field goal at the 10:08 mark of the first
quarter. The Irish nearly gave those points right back when Jim Ramella
recorded a safety for Boston College less than three minutes later, making the
score 3-2 heading into the second frame.
Tausch knocked through a 34-yard field goal for Notre Dame to move the score
to 6-2, but Shinskie then guided the visitors on a nine-play, 68-yard drive
that culminated with a seven-yard TD pass to Gunnell to give the Eagles a 9-6
With the first half winding down Clausen moved the Irish down the field, 74
yards in just over four minutes, and put his squad back on top at 13-9 when he
hit Tate with an 11-yard scoring strike.
The only points in the third quarter came courtesy of a two-yard TD run by
BC's Montel Harris, handing the lead right back to the Eagles at 16-13 on the
first possession of the second half.
The offenses for both teams struggled the rest of the way, yet Clausen still
managed to hit Tate with a 36-yard touchdown pass at the 8:12 mark of the
fourth quarter, a score that ended up being the game-winner in the four-point
The Notre Dame defense held the Eagles to just 70 yards rushing on 29 attempts
on the day.
