Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Brian Johnson threw two touchdowns, and
Matt Asiata ran for two more as 17th-ranked Utah defeated Weber State, 37-21,
at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Johnson completed 18-of-22 throws for 194 yards, with an interception, and
Asiata finished with 37 yards on 10 carries. Darrell Mack added 58 yards on
the ground on 12 carries, and Bradon Godfrey and Colt Sampson each found the
end zone once for Utah (5-0).
Cameron Higgins went 24-for-38 with 303 yards and three touchdowns for Weber
State (3-2). Tim Toone caught six passes for 118 yards and a score, while
Bryant Eteuati had eight receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Utah was able to hold the Wildcats to only 56 yards on the ground, outgaining
Weber State in total by a 450-359 margin.
Louie Sakoda opened up the second half scoring with his second field goal of
the game for Utah, a 46-yarder with 6:09 left in the third. Weber State
fumbled on their next possession, and Asiata capped a five-play, 41-yard drive
with a one-yard score with just under two minutes to go in the quarter. The
touchdown gave Utah a 34-7 lead heading into the final frame.
Another field goal from Sakoda -- a 38-yarder with 10:13 to go -- gave the
Utes their biggest lead of the night at 37-7.
Weber State scored with 6:41 to play on Cody Nakamura's nine-yard touchdown
catch, and the Wildcats scored again with 12 seconds to go on a seven-yard
touchdown reception by Eteuati to account for the final 37-21 margin.
After Weber State missed a field goal with 6:51 left in the first, Utah took
over at their own 20. On 3rd-and-1 from the 29, Johnson found Chris Joppru for
a 29-yard gain. After three rushes, Jereme Brooks hit Corbin Louks for 33
yards down to the Wildcats' one-yard line, and Asiata punched it into the end
zone with three minutes left in the frame.
Higgins brought Weber State right back, though, gaining 61 yards through the
air and finishing a five-play 80-yard drive with a 35-yard touchdown pass to
Toone to make it 7-7 just before the first quarter ended.
The Utes answered on their ensuing drive. Johnson completed passes of nine, 11
and 25 yards before finding Sampson for a six-yard touchdown to cap an eight-
play, 67-yard drive that took only three minutes. The score put Utah up 14-7
with 12:42 to go in the half.
Sakoda hit a 33-yard field goal for Utah with about eight minutes left in the
second to open up a 17-7 advantage.
Johnson gave Utah a 24-7 lead going into halftime. The Utah quarterback went
8-for-8 on a 10-play, 81-yard drive, throwing for 78 yards and finishing the
march with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Godfrey with 43 seconds left on the
Weber State head coach Ron McBride spent 13 years (1990-2002) as the head
coach at Utah. He was replaced by current Florida head coach Urban Meyer after
compiling an 88-63 record -- including six bowl appearances -- for the
Utes...Weber State is 3-40 against FBS programs...The Wildcats take on Montana
at home on October 4, while the Utes will host Oregon State on October 2.
