Toledo,OH (Sports Network) - Julian Reams ran for three touchdowns to lead
the Golden Panthers to their first win of season, as Florida International
defeated the Toledo Rockets, 35-16, in a non-conference clash at the Glass
Bowl.
Reams carried the ball 19 times for 75 yards and A'mod Ned added 51 yards and
a score on 15 attempts for the Golden Panthers (1-3). Paul McCall got the nod
at quarterback and threw for 98 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-13 tosses.
Nick Moore guided the Rockets (1-3) with 65 yards on nine catches. He also
threw a touchdown. Morgan Williams rushed the ball 25 times for 98 yards,
while Aaron Opelt passed for 177 yards and an interception on 26-of-45 tosses.
The Rockets started off strong, scoring 13 points in the game's first 15
minutes. A 31-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Stephen Williams got things
started and was followed by two Alex Steigerwald field goals from 41 and 47
yards, respectively.
FIU answered Toledo's first quarter performance with two touchdowns of its
own. McCall connected with T.Y. Hilton for a 37-yard touchdown pass to get the
Golden Panthers on the board early in the second quarter. At the halfway point
of the second quarter, Reams scored on a one-yard run to give the Golden
Panthers a 14-13 lead.
With just over a minute to play in the first half, Steigerwald connected on
a 41-yard kick to give the Rockets a 16-14 lead at halftime.
FIU wasted little time getting on the board in the third quarter, as Reams
scampered 27 yards for a touchdown just 22 seconds into the period.
Following a turnover, Reams plunged one yard for a score, giving the Golden
Panthers a 28-16 advantage.
Toledo fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving the ball right back to the
Golden Panthers. Facing a fourth-and-two from the Toledo six-yard line, FIU
passed up an easy field goal attempt and decided to go for it. That decision
paid off, as Ned scored on the very next play to extend the Golden
Panthers' lead to 35-16. Neither offense would be heard from again.
The Rockets outgained the Golden Panthers, 302-239, but four turnovers were
too much for Toledo to overcome.
With his three field goals on the night, Steigerwald has now connected on 23
straight, which extended his own MAC record.
