NCAA Game Summary - BYU at Utah State

(Friday, October 3rd)

Final Score: (8) BYU 34, Utah State 14

Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Max Hall threw for 303 yards and two scores on 23-of-37 passing, as eighth-ranked Brigham Young scored early and often en route to a 34-14 win over Utah State.

Hall also was intercepted twice, while Harvey Unga ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for BYU (5-0), which extended its winning streak to 15 games -- the longest in the nation.

Austin Collie caught eight passes for 132 yards and two scores for the Cougars, who scored 24 points in the first quarter. They have now scored 134 combined points in the first half this season.

Diondre Borel threw for 114 yards on 10-of-15 passing, with one TD and interception each for Utah State (1-4), which was coming off its only win of the season. Borel made a number of costly turnovers in the pivotal first quarter.

Robert Turbin ran for 74 yards and a score on eight carries for the Aggies, who managed two fourth-quarter TDs against a BYU defense that had shut out its past two opponents.

The Cougars got all the points the needed in the opening 15 minutes. After Utah State went three-and-out on the first possession of the game, BYU took over and, on the third play of the drive Hall found Collie for a 76-yard scoring strike.

The Aggies managed to gain a pair of first downs on their next series, but Borel fumbled on a rush. The Cougars' Brandon Bradley recovered and dashed 35 yards into the end zone for a 14-0 BYU lead not halfway through the first quarter.

A similar pratfall doomed Utah State on its next touch, as Borel fumbled again while being sacked. BYU once again recovered at the Utah State 46, though couldn't reach the end zone. Mitch Payne eventually kicked a 44-yard field goal to give BYU a 17-point edge.

Borel's inability to keep the ball on the Utah State side presented itself on the first play of the next drive, as he was intercepted by David Nixon. It gave BYU the ball deep in Utah State territory, and Unga ran 11 yards into the end zone for a 24-0 Cougars lead.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, and BYU took its lead into halftime, then added onto it in the third.

A 21-yard field goal from Payne early in the stanza and a 12-yard TD completion from Hall to Collie gave BYU a 34-0 lead after three quarters.

Utah State finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter. Turbin capped a drive that bridged the final two quarters with a 40-yard dash less than two minutes in. Then, several minutes later, Borel found Tarren Lloyd for another score -- a five-yard throw -- that brought Utah State within 20.

However, BYU was able to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard from there.
