NCAA Game Summary - Rice at Texas-El Paso

El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Chase Clement threw for five touchdowns and ran for another to lift the Rice Owls over the Texas-El Paso Miners, 49-44, in a Conference USA clash at Sun Bowl Stadium.

Clement finished the game 28-of-41 for 372 yards and he also added 28 yards on seven carries for Rice (6-3, 5-1 CUSA), which won its third straight game. James Casey was his main target with 12 catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns, and Jarett Dillard also had a solid game with eight receptions for 93 yards and a score. Casey also carried the ball seven times for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Trevor Vittatoe headed the charge for UTEP (3-5, 3-2) with 265 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-37 tosses. Jeff Moturi was on the receiving end of three touchdown passes and he ended up with five receptions for 109 yards.

It took the Miners just over two minutes to get on the board, as Jose Martinez booted a 46-yard field goal.

Rice countered just over a minute later with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Clement to Pierre Beasley.

UTEP then took a 17-7 lead behind back-to-back touchdown passes in a span of less than three minutes. Vittatoe first hooked up with Kris Adams from 37 yards out before James Thomas II tossed a 53-yard scoring strike to Moturi.

The Owls answered late in the period when Clement found Casey from 37 yards away.

A three-yard touchdown run by Clement gave Rice a 21-17 lead early in the second quarter.

Following a 39-yard field goal by UTEP's Martinez, Dillard hauled in a six- yard touchdown pass from Clement to give Rice a 28-20 lead at the break.

Rice added to its lead with a two-yard touchdown run by Casey early in the third quarter.

Martinez than nailed a 44-yard field goal and Vittatoe and Moturi hooked up on a seven-yard scoring play to pull the Miners within five points at 35-30.

Early in the fourth quarter, Clement threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Casey to give Rice a 42-30 advantage.

Moments later, Donald Buckram rumbled seven yards to paydirt for the Miners.

With just over five minutes left to play, the Owls put the game away with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Clement to Casey.

Moturi pulled down a two-yard touchdown pass from Vittatoe in the closing moments, but it wasn't enough for UTEP.

Rice made good on 9-of-16 third down chances in the game, while UTEP went just 3-of-10 its opportunities.
