Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Darius Marshall rushed for 112 yards and
one touchdown on 30 carries, as the Marshall Thundering Herd defeated the
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, 34-27, in Conference-USA action at M. M.
Darius Passmore had himself a tremendous game for Marshall (3-1, 2-0 C-USA),
as the wide out caught nine passes for 139 yards and one touchdown, while also
rushing for 80 yards and one score on two carries. Quarterback Matt Cann threw
for 228 yards and two TDs in the win.
As for the Golden Eagles (2-2, 0-1), they were paced by Damion Fletcher who
rushed for 82 yards and one touchdown on 21 totes. Austin Davis added 45 yards
and one TD on the ground, but the quarterback also threw for 308 yards and one
touchdown on 27-of-49 passing.
A 68-yard touchdown pass from Davis to DeAndre Brown opened the scoring early
in the first quarter, as the Golden Eagles took a 7-0 lead.
The Thundering Herd evened the score on their next possession, as Cann hit
Passmore with a 27-yard touchdown pass.
Marshall took a 10-7 lead midway through the opening frame when Tyler Warner
nailed a 37-yard field.
Southern Miss tied the game at 10 early in the second stanza when Justin Estes
connected on a 42-yard field goal.
The Thundering Herd regained the lead when Cann found Cody Slate for a 16-
yard scoring strike.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, the Golden Eagles
chipped away at their deficit, as Estes split the uprights with a 45-yard
Marshall opened the second half with an eight-play, 54-yard drive which
resulted in a 28-yard field goal by Warner.
The Thundering Herd extended their lead to 27-13 when Passmore broke free and
rumbled down field for an 80-yard touchdown run.
Late in the third quarter, the Golden Eagles cut their deficit to seven when
Davis scored on a 12-yard run.
An 18-yard touchdown run by Marshall pushed the Thundering Herd's lead 34-20
late in the final frame.
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation Fletcher broke the goal
line on a two-yard run for Southern Mississippi. However, it was too late for
the Golden Eagles, as they eventually fell by a 34-27 margin.
