El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 263 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the UTEP Miners to a convincing, 58-13, victory over the
UCF Knights in a Conference-USA showdown at the Sun Bowl Stadium.
Kris Adams only caught four passes for UTEP (1-3, 1-0 C-USA), but the wide out
finished with 128 yards and one touchdown in the win. Vernon Frazier led the
way on the ground for the Miners with 73 yards and one TD.
Rob Calabrese struggled for UCF (1-3, 0-1), as the quarterback completed just
13-of-31 passes for just 167 yards and one score. The signal caller was also
intercepted twice and sacked twice.
The Miners control the game in the first quarter, beginning with a 38-yard
field goal by Jose Martinez. UTEP followed with a defensive touchdown, as Josh
Ferguson used a fumble recovery to score on a 45-yard run.
UTEP pushed its lead to 17-0 midway the second frame when Vittatoe hit Jamar
Hunt with a 14-yard scoring strike.
The Knights finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when
Calabrese hit Kamar Aiken with a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Less than a minute later the Miners answered back in a huge way, as Vittatoe
connected with Adams on a deep 74-yard scoring strike.
UTEP pushed its advantage to 27-7 when Martinez nailed an incredible 64-yard
field goal as time expired in the first half.
Midway through the third frame the Miners extended their lead to 33-7 when
Vittatoe hit Jeff Moturi with a 25-yard TD strike.
The Knights capped off a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown
run by Ronnie Weaver.
However, the Miners answered back with a five-yard touchdown run by Tufick
Shadrawy late in the third quarter, extending the team's lead to 41-13.
The offensive dominance by UTEP continued, as Vernon Frazier scampered for a
55-yard touchdown run midway through the final frame.
A 42-yard field goal by Martinez and a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Dane
O'Niel were the final points for UTEP, as the Miners pounded UCF, 58-13.
