(Saturday, October 18th)

Final Score: Northwestern 48, Purdue 26

Evanston, IL (Sports Network) - C.J. Bacher passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, as the Northwestern Wildcats outlasted the Purdue Boilermakers, 48-26, in Big Ten play at Ryan Field.

Bacher completed 20-of-33 tosses for 220 yards and he also ran for 41 more yards on 15 carries, as the Wildcats (6-1, 2-1 BigTen) rebounded nicely following their first loss to Michigan State last weekend. Tyrell Sutton also had a solid game, rushing for 96 yards on 18 carries and catching four balls for 62 yards and a score. Eric Peterman got involved as well, as he caught a touchdown and threw another.

Kory Sheets paced the Boilermakers (2-5, 0-3) with 168 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Curtis Painter converted on 26-of-41 pass attempts for 273 yards and a touchdown, but he was also intercepted three times. Greg Orton was his favorite target with seven receptions for 100 yards and a score, as Purdue dropped its fourth game in a row.

Carson Wiggs hit a pair of field goals in the final five minutes of the opening quarter and Purdue held a 6-0 advantage.

It took the Wildcats just over a minute to get on the board in the second quarter, as Bacher threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Peterman.

Northwestern added to its lead three minutes later, when Peterman tossed a 30- yard scoring strike to Sidney Stewart.

A 26-yard field goal by Amado Villarreal just over a minute later pushed the Wildcats' advantage to 17-6.

With just over a minute left in the half, Purdue cut into Northwestern's lead with a two-yard touchdown run by Sheets. The extra-point was off the mark, however,

The Wildcats responded with an eight-play, 57-yard drive that was capped with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Bacher to Sutton with just 15 seconds left. The drive took only 54 seconds and gave Northwestern a 24-12 lead at the break.

Following a 29-yard field goal by Villarreal, Brendan Mitchell hauled in a one-yard touchdown pass from Bacher to give Northwestern a 34-12 lead late in the third quarter.

Purdue tried to make a game of it with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Painter to Orton just seconds into the final frame.

Northwestern, though, would put this one away with back-to-back touchdowns over a minute span midway through the period. Bacher first plunged one yard for a score before Omar Conteh posted a 14-yard touchdown run.

A 76-yard touchdown run by Sheets capped the game's scoring, with Purdue on the short end of a 48-26 decision.

The Boilermakers turned the ball over five times, while giving up 451 total yards to Northwestern.
