NCAA Game Summary - Northwestern at Duke

(Saturday, September 6th)

Final Score: Northwestern 24, Duke 20

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Tyrell Sutton recorded a pair of rushing touchdowns to help give the Northwestern Wildcats a 24-20 win over the Duke Blue Devils in non-conference action at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Sutton finished with a team-best 66 yards on 16 carries for the Wildcats (2-0), although the team generated a total of only 77 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

Quarterback C.J. Bacher converted 14-of-31 passing for 226 yards as well for the visitors.

The Blue Devils (1-1) were paced by Thaddeus Lewis who not only ran for a score, he also hit on 24-of-42 passing for 256 yards for the home team.

Duke took the opening kick and marched 72 yards in 11 plays, capped by a two- yard touchdown run by Clifford Harris to give the squad a 7-0 advantage.

Northwestern responded late in the period when Sutton scored the first of back-to-back touchdowns on an 18-yard run.

In the second frame Sutton's four-yard TD run gave the Wildcats a 14-7 edge.

The teams traded field goals to close out the first half, Nick Maggio converting a 21-yard effort for the Blue Devils and Amado Villarreal closing out the period with a 35-yard kick at the buzzer to give Northwestern a 17-10 advantage at the break.

The only scoring in the third quarter came from Maggio who knocked through a 38-yard effort to cut the Duke deficit to just four points at 17-13.

Duke then took a 20-17 lead early in the fourth when Lewis raced 16 yards into the end zone.

Unfortunately, the Blue Devils gave those points right back on the next possession when Northwestern's Omar Conteh posted the game-winner on a two- yard touchdown run with 9:04 remaining in the contest.

Duke finished the evening with 472 yards of total offense and controlled the ball for almost 40 minutes, yet that still was not enough to hold off the Wildcats down the stretch.
