NCAA Game Summary - BYU at San Diego State

(Saturday, December 1st)

Final Score: (21) BYU 48, San Diego State 27

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Harvey Unga gained 161 yards on 23 carries and scored a career-high four touchdowns -- three on the ground -- as the 21st-ranked Brigham Young Cougars downed the San Diego State Aztecs, 48-27.

Max Hall completed 19-of-26 passes for 227 yards, three scores, and an interception for BYU (10-2, 8-0 MWC), which had already wrapped up the Mountain West Conference title prior to the game. The Cougars now look for some help to move from 19th and into the top-12 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, to be released on Sunday. A finish in the top-12 would guarantee a coveted BCS bid for the Cougars.

Kevin O'Connell completed 33-of-55 passes for 288 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, and added 61 yards and two scores on 17 carries for San Diego State (4-8, 3-5 MWC), which dropped three straight to finish the season. Chaz Schilens had eight grabs for 106 yards, and Brett Swain gained 98 yards on 10 catches for the Aztecs.

BYU drove right down the field on the first drive of the second half, and Unga stormed into the end zone from seven yards out to extend the Cougars lead to 27-13.

O'Connell and San Diego State carved out a 14-play, 68-yard march, and Lynell Hamilton's three-yard scoring catch again brought the underdog Aztecs within a score at 27-20 with 6:49 to play in the third quarter.

The Aztecs couldn't keep Unga down, though, as the Cougars back almost single handedly powered the next drive, a 12-play, 72-yard jaunt that he finished off with a three-yard scoring run, and BYU led 34-20 with 52 seconds left in the third.

Unga continued to drive the BYU offense, but he relinquished the scoring duties to Fui Vakapuna on the next drive, who dove in from two yards out to give the Cougars some breathing room, up 41-20 with 12:17 remaining in regulation.

O'Connell's two-yard scoring run cut the BYU lead to 41-27 with 9:37 left, but the Cougars added another score, a 13-yard TD pass from Hall to Dennis Pitta to salt away the win.

Unga's first score of the day, an eight-yard TD reception, capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive, and BYU took a 7-0 lead with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter.

San Diego State answered by grinding out a 16-play, 65-yard drive. Faced with a 4th-and-1 from the seven, the Aztecs chose not to attempt the short field goal, and O'Connell broke through to the end zone to tie the game exactly five minutes after Unga's first score.

The Cougars marched right back down the field, though, and Unga plunged in from a yard out to put BYU back on top with two seconds remaining in the first quarter. Mitch Payne's point after was no good, though, and BYU led 13-7.

Garrett Palmer's 38-yard field goal brought the Aztecs within 13-10 with 5:39 left in the first half. BYU came right back though, and Austin Collie's 17- yard scoring grab extended the Cougars lead to 20-10 with 1:11 left in the half.

San Diego State was able to squeeze one more score in the first half, though, as Palmer nailed a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds to cut the deficit to 20-13 at the half.
