Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Quarterback Kevin O'Connell recorded three
rushing touchdowns, the last with just 43 seconds remaining, as the San Diego
State Aztecs defeated the Colorado State Rams, 24-20, in Mountain West
Conference action at Hughes Stadium.
The SDSU signal-caller finished the contest with 41 yards on 16 carries for the
Aztecs (2-3, 1-0 MWC) and also completed 13-of-26 passing for another 184
yards, while surviving seven sacks.
Caleb Hanie paced Colorado State with 188 yards through the air on 14-of-26
passing, while Kyle Bell gained 76 yards on 19 carries for the home team. With
the loss the Rams have now fallen in 12 straight, the second-longest skid in
O'Connell scored the first points of the contest on a one-yard TD run early in
the opening frame to give SDSU a 7-0 advantage at the break following an
scoreless second quarter.
The Rams then opened the second half with 10 straight points, beginning with a
39-yard field goal by Jason Smith. Hanie's one-yard touchdown run midway
through the period gave the home team a brief 10-7 advantage.
Two and a half minutes later it was San Diego State kicker Garrett Palmer who
knocked through a 33-yard field goal to lock the score at 10-10.
However, the end of the third saw Smith convert a 20-yard field goal for the
Rams, putting them ahead by a count of three at 13-10 with 15 minutes
Less than a minute and a half into the fourth quarter it was O'Connell again
for the Aztecs, this time finding the end zone from 16 yards out to push the
visitors back ahead by a 17-13 score.
Capping an eight-play, 86-yard drive late in the frame, Hanie connected with
Damon Morton for a 40-yard touchdown pass to give CSU a 20-17 edge, but less
than two minutes later O'Connell answered the call with a one-yard scoring run
of his own to give the Aztecs the four-point victory.
San Diego State converted only 5-of-16 on third down in the contest, but the
squad was a perfect 4-of-4 on scoring opportunities inside the red zone.
