San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - With just 66 seconds remaining in regulation,
Kevin O'Connell connected with Vincent Brown on a 27-yard scoring strike,
giving the San Diego State Aztecs a thrilling, 27-24 victory over the Wyoming
Cowboys in a Mountain West Conference tilt at Qualcomm Stadium.
O'Connell finished the game with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns on 20-
of-44 attempts. The quarterback also led SDSU (3-5, 2-2 MWC) with 41 rushing
yards, while also scoring a TD on the ground.
As for the Cowboys (5-3, 2-3), they were led by quarterback Karsten Sween, who
completed 22-of-30 passes, but for only 159 yards and two scores. Sween also
tossed an interception in the setback and was sacked four times.
The Cowboys dominated the first quarter, beginning with a 19-yard scoring
strike from Sween to Michael Ford.
Wyoming pushed its lead to 14-0 later in the quarter when Quincy Rogers
returned an interception 80 yards to pay dirt.
Sween and Ford hooked up again late in the second frame, this score going for
30 yards, while pushing Wyoming's lead to 21-0.
Fortunately for the Aztecs, they were able to put together a solid drive in
the final minutes of the half, which was capped off with a five-yard touchdown
pass from O'Connell to Chaz Schilens.
Midway through the third quarter the Aztecs continued their comeback run, as
O'Connell scampered into the end zone on a 29-yard run. Unfortunately the
extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 21-13 in favor of Wyoming.
A six-yard touchdown run by Brandon Sullivan cut the Aztecs deficit to 21-20
late in the third frame.
Early in the final frame Wyoming pushed its lead to 24-20 when Billy Vinnedge
nailed a 44-yard field goal.
The touchdown pass from O'Connell to Brown gave the Aztecs their first lead of
the contest, and more importantly it gave SDSU a much needed victory.
