Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Brian Johnson threw for 220 yards and a
score, as the Utah Utes defeated the San Diego State Aztecs, 23-7, in Mountain
West Conference action at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Johnson completed 22-of-29 pass attempts and was intercepted once, as Utah
(4-3, 1-2 MWC) won its third game in a row. Darrell Mack paced the ground
attack, rushing 22 times for 131 yards in the victory.
Kevin O'Connell had a rough game under center for the Aztecs (2-4, 1-1), as he
hit on just 14-of-31 tosses for 114 yards and an interception. As a team, the
SDSU gained just 211 total yards and 12 first downs in the loss.
Utah scored the only points of the first quarter on a Louie Sakoda 32-yard
field goal late in the period.
Sakoda than nailed a 51-yard field goal to give the Utes a 6-0 lead early in
the second frame.
SDSU took the lead midway through the second quarter behind a Brandon Sullivan
five-yard touchdown run.
With just five seconds left before the half, Sakoda hit a 27-yard field goal
to give the Utes a 9-7 lead at the break.
Midway through the third quarter, Utah extended its lead courtesy of Corbin
Louks 11-yard touchdown pass to Jereme Brooks.
The Utes added to their lead less than five minutes later, when Johnson threw
a seven-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Mack. Neither offense would be heard
from again, as Utah earned the 23-7 victory.
Utah rolled up 514 yards of total offense, including 282 on the ground in the
