Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
rushed for 338 yards, as they posted a 37-7 triumph over the UAB Blazers in a
Conference USA showdown at Legion Field.
Five Southern Mississippi (5-4, 4-2 C-USA) players rushed for more than 45
yards in the game, with Antwain Easterling's 85 yards leading the way. Damion
Fletcher and Tory Harrison punched in touchdowns via the ground and they
combined for 124 yards. Quarterback Jeremy Young returned after missing three
games and he threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He also chipped in with 58
rushing yards. The recipient of both touchdown passes was Ed Morgan, who
finished with three catches for 47 yards.
The Blazers (2-7, 1-4) did not have many highlights on either side of the
ball. The defense was ravaged for 456 yards and the offense managed just 13
first downs behind quarterbacks Sam Hunt and Joseph Webb. The two combined to
complete just 17-of-37 pass attempts for 179 yards, with a touchdown and an
interception. Sylvester Mencer caught a game-high four balls for 65 yards and
a touchdown in the losing cause.
The Blazers' defense held Southern Miss without a touchdown in the first
quarter, as Justin Estes' 40-yard field goal was the lone score in the opening
The Golden Eagles' 27-point second quarter began just under two minutes into
the period with a four-yard touchdown connection of Young to Morgan.
The two hooked up again just two minutes later, this time from 36 yards away.
Harrison put Southern Mississippi up by 24-0 with a four-yard touchdown run
late in the second quarter. Estes kicked a 43 and 40-yard field goal in the
final three minutes of the first half and the Golden Eagles carried a 30-0
lead into the break.
The onslaught continued with Fletcher's four-yard touchdown run midway through
the third quarter.
Late in the third quarter, Mencer caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hunt
for UAB's first and only points of the game. Neither offense would be heard
Southern Mississippi forced two turnovers and recorded three sacks, while
limiting UAB to only 244 total yards.
