Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Chris Johnson erupted for a career-high 301
rushing yards and four touchdowns, leading the East Carolina Pirates to a 56-40
win over the Memphis Tigers in a Conference USA showdown at the Liberty Bowl.
Johnson paced an ECU (6-4, 5-1 C-USA) ground attack that churned out 491
yards on the day. Quarterback Pat Pinkney ran for 94 yards and a touchdown, and
threw for 105 yards and another two scores.
Memphis (4-5, 3-2) relied on its passing game, with quarterback Martin Hankins
completing 34-of-60 passes for 416 yards and four touchdowns. However, Hankins
was also intercepted twice. Sophomore wideouts Duke Calhoun (eight catches, one
touchdown) and Carlos Singleton (six catches, two TDs) both had 100-yard
After Memphis got off to a 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Matt Reagan, ECU
closed out the first quarter with two unanswered touchdowns.
Johnson scored on a 16-yard run, and minutes later, Pinkney followed up with a
45-yard touchdown scamper to give the Pirates a 14-3 lead.
Johnson broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown dash in the opening minute of the
second quarter to expand the Tigers' lead to 21-3.
Reagan kicked a 24-yarder with 6:18 to play in the half, and Hankins tossed a
14-yard touchdown pass to Calhoun to pull the Tigers to within 21-13 at the
But Johnson struck again on the second play of the second half, ripping off a
70-yard touchdown run to give the Pirates a 28-13 lead.
Memphis answered with a seven-play, 56-yard drive, punctuated by a five-yard
touchdown pass from Hankins to Singleton.
But ECU would not let off the gas, as Dominique Lindsay responded with a 22-
yard touchdown run, followed by Pinkney's six-yard touchdown pass to Jamar
Bryant with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter.
Two minutes later, Joseph Doss narrowed the deficit to 42-26 with a two-yard

Memphis answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hankins to Singleton in the
opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Tigers could draw no closer.
Johnson scored his final touchdown on a 50-yard touchdown run with 5:22 to
play, and Memphis could only muster a one-yard touchdown pass from Hankins to
Taz Knockum with the outcome all but decided.
Memphis finished with just 77 yards on the ground, as the Tigers went just 5-
of-17 on third downs. With the win, ECU stays atop Conference USA's East
