El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Rob Kass threw for 219 yards and a touchdown, in
addition to scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime of the East Carolina
Pirates' 45-42 Conference-USA victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners.
Kass completed 18-of-32 passes for the Pirates (4-3, 3-1 C-USA), though he was
also intercepted three times. Chris Johnson carried 23 times for 126 yards,
while Jamar Bryant hauled in seven passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Trevor Vittatoe completed 38-of-55 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns
for UTEP (4-3, 2-1). Jeff Moturi led the receiving corps with 12 catches for
113 yards and a score, while Marcus Thomas rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown
on 22 carries.
Vittatoe kicked off the scoring for UTEP with a 42-yard scoring strike to
Thomas at the 12:09 mark of the opening quarter.
ECU got on the board midway through the first quarter with a 52-yard field goal
by Ben Hartman.
One minute later, the Pirates took the lead when Van Eskridge recovered a
fumble and returned it 50 yards to the end zone.
UTEP tied the score at 10 on a 41-yard field goal by Jose Martinez with 11:27
to play in the half.
Hartman connected on field goals of 28 and 24 yards in the same quarter, giving
the Pirates a 16-10 advantage with three minutes remaining in the half.
But UTEP again tied the score when Joe West caught a nine-yard touchdown pass
from Vittatoe in the final minute of the half, although the extra point was
blocked and returned the other way by ECU's Travis Williams.
The Miners, however, drove quickly back down the field and took a 19-18 lead
into the locker room thanks to a 42-yard Martinez field goal as time expired in
After a 34-yarder by Martinez in the opening minutes of the third quarter, ECU
reclaimed the lead when Dwayne Harris crossed the goal line on a 57-yard run.
The Pirates expanded their lead to 32-22 on an 80-yard scoring strike from
Harris to Bryant midway through the third quarter.
UTEP responded with a 43-yard field goal by Martinez two minutes later.
The Miners opened the fourth quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass from
Vittatoe to Moturi, capping off a nine-play, 70-yard drive.
UTEP took a 39-32 lead when Thomas broke loose for a 31-yard touchdown run with
only 34 seconds remaining in regulation.
But ECU marched right back down the field and forced overtime on a 34-yard
touchdown pass from Kass to Juwon Crowell as time expired.
UTEP got first possession in the extra session, though the Miners managed only
three points on a 45-yard field goal by Martinez.
The Pirates sealed the win on Kass's one-yard touchdown plunge.
ECU managed to win despite allowing 589 yards of total offense, and a nearly
13-minute advantage in time of possession.
