Evanston, IL (Sports Network) - Tyrell Sutton rushed for 141 yards and one
touchdown, as the Northwestern Wildcats posted a thrilling, 31-28 victory over
the Indiana Hoosiers in a Big ten matchup at Ryan Field.
Quarterback C. J. Bacher completed 26-of-33 passes for Northwestern (6-5, 3-4
BigTen), finishing the game with 276 yards and one score. Unfortunately Bacher
also tossed three interceptions in the contest.
As for Indiana (6-5, 2-5), the team was led by quarterback Kellen Lewis, who
threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis also rushed for 36 yards and one
TD in the loss.
The Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard, as Amado Villarreal nailed a 29-yard
field goal early in the opening quarter.
The Hoosiers answered back instantly, as James Bailey took the ensuing kick
off 91 yards for a touchdown.
A 14-yard touchdown run by Lewis early in the second stanza pushed Indiana's
lead to 14-3.
The Wildcats kept themselves in the contest due to timely defense, as Eddie
Simpson returned an interception 41 yards to pay dirt.
Northwestern regained the lead early in the third quarter when Sutton plunged
into the end zone from one yard out.
A 15-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Roberson to Kim Thompson late in the
third period extended Northwestern's lead to 24-14.
Less than two minutes later Lewis connected with James Hardy for an 11-yard
score, cutting the Hoosiers deficit to 24-21.
Midway through the fourth frame Indiana regained the lead at 24-21 when Lewis
hit Hardy with a five-yard scoring strike.
However, the Wildcats clawed their way down field, using a 12-play, 73-yard
drive which resulted in a three-yard touchdown pass from Bacher to Ross Lane
in the final seconds of the contest.
Although the Wildcats needed a last second touchdown to pull off the victory,
the team dominated the yardage game, racking up 456 total yards, while holding
Indiana to just 298 total yards.
