Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Kevin Smith ran for a career-high 217 yards
and two touchdowns on 35 carries, leading the UCF Golden Knights to a 25-23
triumph over the North Carolina State Wolfpack in a non-conference tilt from
Kyle Israel threw for just 93 yards on 12-of-24 pass attempts for UCF (1-0),
which defeated an ACC opponent for the first time in the program's existence.
Harrison Beck was 17-of-28 for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the North
Carolina State loss (0-1). Andre Brown tallied 73 rushing yards and a score on
14 carries in the setback.
On the game's opening play, Smith broke free for an 80-yard score. Michael
Torres added a 40-yard field goal just minutes later, as UCF extended its lead
Late in the first quarter, the Knights recorded a safety and Torres hit a 36-
yard field goal, giving them a 15-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Late in the second quarter, Steven Hauschka put North Carolina State on the
board with a 29-yard field goal.
The Knights, however, answered back on the next series, as Smith found the end
zone on an eight-yard run. As time expired in the first half, Torres nailed a
19-yard field goal to give UCF a 25-3 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Brown scored on a 33-yard run for North Carolina State
and the Wolfpack trailed 25-10.
Early in the fourth quarter, Beck hit Pat Bedics on a six-yard strike to
close the gap to 25-17. Midway through the period, Beck found Donald Bowens
for a 14-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion attempt failed, and UCF
kept its slim lead, 25-23. The Knights' defense stepped up the rest of the
way, as they held on for the victory.
UFC racked up 206 yards on the ground in the contest, while North Carolina
State managed just 85 rushing yards.
