Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Kevin Smith ran for a career-high 217 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries, leading the UCF Golden Knights to a 25-23 triumph over the North Carolina State Wolfpack in a non-conference tilt from Carter-Finley Stadium.

Kyle Israel threw for just 93 yards on 12-of-24 pass attempts for UCF (1-0), which defeated an ACC opponent for the first time in the program's existence.

On the game's opening play, Smith broke free for an 80-yard score. Michael Torres added a 40-yard field goal just minutes later, as UCF extended its lead to 10-0.

Late in the first quarter, the Knights recorded a safety and Torres hit a 36- yard field goal, giving them a 15-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Late in the second quarter, Steven Hauschka put North Carolina State on the board with a 29-yard field goal.

The Knights, however, answered back on the next series, as Smith found the end zone on an eight-yard run. As time expired in the first half, Torres nailed a 19-yard field goal to give UCF a 25-3 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Brown scored on a 33-yard run for North Carolina State and the Wolfpack trailed 25-10.

Early in the fourth quarter, Beck hit Pat Bedics on a six-yard strike to close the gap to 25-17. Midway through the period, Beck found Donald Bowens for a 14-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion attempt failed, and UCF kept its slim lead, 25-23. The Knights' defense stepped up the rest of the way, as they held on for the victory.

UFC racked up 206 yards on the ground in the contest, while North Carolina State managed just 85 rushing yards.
