Final Score: Texas A&M 12, (11) Texas 7
Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Stephen McGee's eight-yard touchdown run late in
the fourth quarter lifted Texas A&M past 11th-ranked Texas, 12-7, in the Lone
McGee completed 7-of-13 passes or 58 yards and added another 95 yards rushing
with the TD for the Aggies (9-3, 5-3 Big 12), who snapped a six-game skid
against the Longhorns and won for only the ninth time in 81 chances at Austin.
Mike Goodson added 86 rushing yards and a touchdown for Texas A&M.
Redshirt freshman Colt McCoy connected on just 17-of-28 passes for 160 yards
with three big interceptions for the Longhorns (9-3, 6-2), who have lost two
straight for the first time since 1999 and now must hope Oklahoma loses in
their season finale to capture at least a share of the Big 12 South Division
If the Sooners beat Oklahoma State on Saturday, they will capture the division
and play Nebraska on December 2 for the league crown.
To add insult to injury for Texas, McCoy had to be carted off the field with
just 20 seconds remaining after apparently injuring his right shoulder.
Down 6-0 and struggling mightily, Texas finally got on the scoreboard in the
third quarter after a turnover. A fumble gave the Longhorns the ball at the
Aggies 45-yard line and McCoy quickly hit Limas Sweed for a 20-yard gain.
Then, a pass interference penalty set up Texas inside the 10 and Jamaal
Charles took it in from six yards out to make it a 7-6 game with 4:20 left in
But, the score didn't deter the Aggies, who kept things close until embarking
on a monstrous 16-play, 88-yard march that took 8:56 minutes off the clock in
the fourth quarter. McGee finished the drive by taking it in from eight yards
out on an option with just 2:32 to go. Texas A&M went for the two-point
conversion but failed and the score was 12-7.
After a touchback on the kickoff, McCoy and the Longhorns needed to go 80
yards to win the game. But, Mark Dodge ended any hopes of a comeback when he
picked off a McCoy pass near midfield.
Texas A&M stunned the Longhorns to take the early advantage. Texas was
driving on the game's opening possession and found themselves at the Aggies'
eight-yard line, facing a 4th-and-1. Longhorns head coach Mack Brown decided
to go for it but Texas was stuffed for no gain, turning the ball over to Texas
The Aggies went right down the field and reached paydirt when Goodson
took an option 41 yards for a TD. The ensuing PAT was missed and Texas A&M led
6-0 with 6:56 left in the opening quarter.
The Longhorns looked like they would get on the scoreboard left in the first
half. McCoy hit Sweed on a fade for what looked like an five-yard TD but the
receiver was called for pushing off. On the next play, McCoy went for the end
zone again but terribly underthrew the ball and Melvin Bullitt was there to
Texas still holds a huge 73-35-5 in the all-time series...Before today, the
Aggies' last victory against Texas came back in 1999 (20-16).
