NCAA Game Summary - Texas at Rice

(Saturday, September 16th)

Final Score: (8) Texas 52, Rice 7

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Selvin Young rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown while Colt McCoy tossed a pair of touchdown passes, as eight-ranked Texas steamrolled past Rice, 52-7, in non-conference action at Reliant Stadium.

Texas (2-1) was looking to rebound from last weeks' 24-7 defeat at the hands of top ranked Ohio State. The loss dropped the Longhorns six spots in the national rankings.

McCoy ended 7-of-8 passing for 124 yards while Jamaal Charles added another 109 yards on the ground with a score for the Longhorns, who won their eighth straight game over Rice and have now won 22 of their last 23 games overall.

Joel Armstrong paced a shutdown Rice offense with 180 yards passing on 18-of- 29 throwing with a TD pass. He was also sacked four times. Jarrett Dillard was his favorite target as he hauled in nine passes for 91 yards with a touchdown reception.

Rice (0-3) has now lost 19 of its last 20 contests. Against Texas, the Owl offense managed just 168 yards of total offense, including negative 12 yards on the ground.

The Longhorns took the opening drive of the game 65 yards on seven plays to score the game's first touchdown. Young rushed for 52 yards on the march -- including a 21-yard burst -- and capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run.

Rice quickly went four plays and out and Charles made it 14-0 when he culminated Texas' second drive with a 20-yard touchdown run with 7:26 left in the first frame.

Greg Johnson made it 17-0 with just 27 seconds left when he made good on a 46- yard field goal try.

The Owls looked to catch a break in the second as Texas marched down the field only to see Young fumble at the Rice one-yard line. The loose ball was recovered by Rice's Marcus Rucker, but just three plays later, Armstrong was sacked and stripped in the end zone and Tim Crowder came out with the ball for a 24-point Texas advantage.

A three-yard loss on the ground by Quinton Smith and two incomplete passes by Armstrong forced another quick punt for Rice and the Longhorns' special teams got into the act as Aaron Ross took the kick 46 yards to the end zone with 8:10 still to play in the first half.

Texas found the end zone one more time before the half as McCoy hit Limas Sweed for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 to go.

The Longhorns extended their lead to 45-0 in the third when McCoy followed a 15-yard rush by Charles with a 38-yard TD strike to Jordan Shipley with 7:32 remaining in the third.

Henry Melton made it 52-0 midway through the fourth with a hard-fought five- yard touchdown run with 6:36 remaining in the game.

Rice and Armstrong avoided the shutout when he hit Dillard for a six-yard TD reception with 3:15 remaining.
