NCAA Game Summary - Iowa State at Texas

(Saturday, September 23rd)

Final Score: (7) Texas 37, Iowa State 14

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Colt McCoy threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns to lead seventh-ranked Texas over Iowa State, 37-14, at Texas Memorial Stadium.

Limas Sweed caught seven passes for 106 yards and a score for the Longhorns (3-1, 1-0 Big 12), who overcame a 1 hour, 10 minute weather delay to win for the second straight time since losing to Ohio State. The game was suspended at the end of the third quarter because of the serious threat of lightning as a result of a storm that passed through the area.

McCoy completed 18-of-23 passes with an interceptions for Texas, which broke open a close game by scoring 21 straight points. Jamaal Charles ran for 78 yards and a touchdown, as the Longhorns have won all six meetings in this series.

"He just seems to be getting better and better," Texas head coach Mack Brown said of McCoy. "His accuracy is what impresses us the most."

Bret Meyer completed 24-of-43 passes for 274 yards with two TDs and two picks for the Cyclones (2-2, 0-1), who have dropped two in a row. Austin Flynn had seven receptions for 90 yards and Todd Blythe had a scoring catch for Iowa State, which suffered its first loss last week to in-state Iowa.

Texas wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, getting a touchdown on its first drive. Charles' five-yard run capped a four-play drive that covered 43 yards. The possession was set up after a bad punt by the Cyclones.

On Iowa State's next possession, punter Mike Brandtner went down for a safety, giving the Longhorns a 9-0 lead.

Texas turned its ensuing drive into another TD. This time Selvin Young ended a three-play, 52-yard drive with a one-yard TD plunge for a 16-0 lead.

Iowa State finally got on the board on its next possession. Meyer ended a nine-play, 61-yard drive with a five-yard TD pass to Walter Nickel to cut the deficit to 16-7 heading into the second.

The Cyclones then scored again midway through the second quarter, Meyer hit Blythe with a six-yard touchdown pass. The possession started because of a McCoy interception and was kept alive after Iowa State converted a third-and- one and followed that with a 32-yard pass play that brought the ball deep into Texas territory.

That was as close as the Longhorns allowed the Cyclones to get. Texas scored the next two touchdowns to end the half and added another in the third quarter to pull away before the lengthy weather delay.

Following the Cyclones' score that made it 16-14, the Longhorns put together an eight-play, 74-yard drive ended by a McCoy 15-yard pass to Sweed for a score. Then, after holding ISU to a punt, McCoy marched his troops 75 yards in under three minutes for another touchdown. This time, Henry Melton ran in from two yards out to end a drive that was kept alive by a 15-yard penalty on fourth down by ISU.

In the third, Texas recorded the only score of the stanza when McCoy hit Jermichael Finley for a 10-yard score.
