Manhattan, KS (Sports Network) - Thomas Clayton rushed for 177 yards and two
scores on 17 carries to lead the Kansas State Wildcats to a 35-21 victory over
the Florida International Golden Panthers in non-conference action.
Parrish Fisher added 74 yards on 14 carries for Kansas State (1-0), while
Allen Webb finished the day 19-of-31 with two touchdowns and one interception.
Josh Padrick completed just 17-of-34 passes for 154 yards and one score for
FIU (0-1), while Julius Eppinger caught seven passes for 53 yards and one
Jeff Snodgrass connected on field goals of 39 and 33 yards to give the
6-0 advantage going into the second quarter.
Late in the second frame, Webb found Victor Mann for a four-yard touchdown
pass which extended the Wildcats' lead to 13-0.
With under a minute remaining in the first half, the Golden Panthers finally
got on the board when Padrick hit Eppinger with a 12-yard touchdown strike.
Right out of the gate in the third quarter, Clayton went 80 yards to
paydirt to give Kansas State a 20-7 lead. Following an FIU turnover,
Clayton found the end zone again, this time on a two-yard run. After a
successful two-point conversion run by Webb, the Wildcats held a 21-point lead
The Panthers responded quickly, cutting their deficit to 28-14 when Adam
Gorman rumbled into the end zone from three yards out.
Later in the third quarter, the FIU special teams contributed to the scoring
blocking a punt which was returned 17 yards by Nick Turnbull to bring the
Panthers within a touchdown.
Early in the final frame, Webb found Jordy Nelson for an eight-yard scoring
strike to give the Wildcats a 35-21 lead and eventual 14-point victory.
