Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Bret Meyer threw three touchdown passes to lift
the Iowa State Cyclones to a 45-17 win over the Kansas State Wildcats in a Big
12 matchup from Jack Trice Stadium.
Meyer completed 16-of-23 pass attempts for 194 yards with no interceptions.
Austin Flynn was his favorite target with seven receptions for 63 yards and a
score, while Stevie Hicks amassed 149 yards and a touchdown on the ground for
the Cyclones (6-3, 3-3 Big 12).
Allan Evridge had a rough outing for Kansas State (4-5, 1-5), as he connected
on just 17-of-30 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Jordy Nelson was on the receiving end of six offerings, gaining 51 yards.
Iowa State came out firing in the first quarter, scoring 17 consecutive points
to open the contest. Ben Barkema hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Meyer, followed by a 38-yard field goal from Bret Culbertson and a 26-yard TD
reception by Todd Blythe on the last play of the quarter.
The Wildcats made it a competitive game at the intermission by scoring early
in the second stanza on a 36-yard field goal by Jeff Snodgrass, then cutting
their deficit to 17-10 on Evridge's one-yard run in the final two minutes of
The Cyclones blew the game open in the third quarter with three straight
touchdowns. Ryan Kock reached paydirt on a one-yard run, followed by a nine-
yard scoring strike from Meyer to Austin Flynn and another one-yard run by
Kock. Kansas State finally got back on the board with a 23-yard touchdown pass
from Evridge to Davin Dennis, but Iowa State's lead still stood at 38-17
entering the final frame.
The Cyclones capped the blowout victory with 6:28 left in regulation on a 37-
yard scoring scamper by Hicks.
Iowa State overcame 13 penalties for 115 yards to capture the win -- the third
in a row for the Cyclones. The Wildcats, who were outgained 415-233 in the
contest, suffered their fourth straight setback.
