NCAA Game Summary - Rice at Texas

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Jamaal Charles rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns to power second-ranked Texas past Rice, 51-10, at Texas Memorial Stadium.

Henry Melton and Ramonce Taylor also added a rushing TD apiece for the Longhorns (3-0), who kept rolling after last week's big win on the road against Ohio State.

Vince Young completed 8-of-14 passes for 101 yards with an interception for Texas. Young also rushed for 77 yards in the victory.

The Longhorns have won seven straight and 35 of the last 36 meetings against Rice.

Chase Clement posted a rushing touchdown for the Owls (0-2), who haven't won in Austin since 1965. Clement completed just 2-of-8 passes for 57 yards.

Texas dominated the running game, gaining 361 yards on the ground while holding Rice to 110 total rushing yards.

The Longhorns jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter thanks to a pair of 25-yard TD runs by Charles.

Texas went 80 yards on just six plays in the game's opening drive and took a 7-0 edge on Charles' first scamper. The Longhorns then forced Rice to punt and responded with a 99-yard scoring drive. Young had a 51-yard run in the march and Charles scored from the 25-yard line again to give Texas a 14-point cushion with 7:17 left.

Charles, a true freshman, scored his third touchdown on a four-yard run with 11:16 remaining in the second quarter.

The Longhorns defense joined the fun and scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Michael Huff recovered a fumble on a botched option play and ran it 21 yards for a touchdown with 10:07 left and Frank Okam jumped on a loose ball in the end zone to make it 35-0 with 5:27 remaining. Okam's TD came when Aaron Harris sacked Clement in the end zone and forced the ball loose.

Texas then pushed its edge to 42-0 with just over a minute left in the half on a one-yard TD run by Melton.

The Longhorns outgained Rice by an incredible 332-68 margin in the first half and compiled 15 first downs compared to just three for the Owls.

David Pino kicked a 40-yard field goal to give Texas a 45-0 edge with 10:02 left in the third and the Owls finally reached the scoreboard on Brennan Landry's 37- yard kick with 5:52 left.

Taylor's 10-yard run pushed the margin to 51-3 late in the third quarter. Clement then capped the scoring with a two-yard TD run with 7:28 left in the fourth.

Game Notes

The Longhorns have won 19 straight over Rice in Austin...Quinton Smith led the Owls with 76 yards on 11 carries...Texas ended with 24 first downs and allowed Rice just 12...The Longhorns have won 17 of their last 18 games in the first month of the season (August/September)...Rice has dropped eight straight overall games and hasn't won since a 44-10 victory over SMU on October 9 of last year.
