Sherman out as head coach at Texas A&M

College Station, TX (Sports Network) - Texas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman has been fired, university athletic director Bill Byrne announced Thursday.

"After discussions with our coaches, we will decide who will be the interim coach of the Aggies in our upcoming bowl game," Byrne said.

Sherman was 25-25 in four seasons, including a 6-6 record in 2011. He received an extension through the 2016 season along with a raise after guiding Texas A&M to a 9-4 mark last year, his lone winning campaign.

"I appreciate coach Sherman's selfless service to Texas A&M as our head football coach and his tireless efforts in building leaders of character," Byrne added. "He is truly one of the great offensive minds in football, both collegiate and professional, and I know that he has much to offer the game of football in the future."

Sherman coached the NFL's Green Bay Packers from 2000-05 and was the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans prior to joining the Aggies.
