Tiger-Cats fire coach Cortez

Hamilton, ON (Sports Network) - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Tuesday that George Cortez has been relieved of his duties as head coach and director of football operations.

"After a thorough evaluation of our organization and our goals moving forward, we have determined that a change in direction is needed," said Hamilton president Scott Mitchell. "We want to thank Coach Cortez for his contributions to the Tiger-Cats and wish him well in his future endeavors."

The Ticats went 6-12 in their lone season under Cortez, who had never been a head coach at any level previously.

Prior to joining Hamilton last January, Cortez spent two seasons in the NFL as the Buffalo Bills' quarterbacks coach. His lengthy coaching career also includes stops in the CFL with Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Saskatchewan.
