Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Maurice Kemp poured in 20 points as the East Carolina Pirates moved past the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds, 70-58, in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Minges Coliseum.
Kemp hit 5-of-10 attempts from the floor and also blocked three shots for East Carolina (21-12). Robert Sampson posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Miguel Paul nearly notched one himself with 12 points and nine assists.
Dylon Cormier tallied 12 points and eight rebounds and Anthony Winbush chipped in 10 for Loyola (23-12). Robert Olson tacked on 11 points off the bench as well.
Despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor in the first period the Pirates managed to go into the break tied, 32-32, by holding advantages from beyond the arc (12-3) and the free-throw line (8-3).
After the half the Pirates began to find some success on the offensive end as they shot 45.5 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes while hitting 16-of-18 attempts from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds couldn't keep up and shot just 32.3 percent to surrender the decision.
Both teams collected 36 rebounds. East Carolina outscored Loyola, 24-8, from the free-throw line
