GAME NOTES: Davidson will finish a season-long, three-game homestand on Saturday evening, as the Wildcats play host to the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington in a non-conference contest.
It's the first of two straight games against CAA opponents for the Wildcats, who will travel to Philadelphia to play Drexel next weekend.
The Wildcats are coming off a 63-56 win over Wofford a week ago. Nik Cochran's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double powered Davidson, which also received 11 points from Tyler Kalinoski. Cochran, who is averaging 9.1 points, has made 31-of-33 attempts from the charity stripe this season. That helps the Wildcats with their 78.2 percent effort from the foul line. De'Mon Brooks (15.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Jake Cohen (11.3 ppg) are the lone double-digit scorers on a team that is shooting 44 percent from the field, including a strong 40 percent from 3-point range. JP Kuhlman (9.3 ppg), Cochran (9.1 ppg) and Chris Czerapowicz (8.8 ppg) make up the remainder of the starting lineup. Davidson makes better than eight 3-point shots each game, which ranks the team among the top-40 in the country. The Wildcats have made at least one trey in 581 consecutive games, a streak that dates back to Jan. 15, 1994.
The Seahawks were 73-66 losers at Georgia Tech last Saturday. Chris Dixon poured in 20 points and handed out five assists to lead UNC-Wilmington. Tanner Milson contributed 16 points and hit four shots from beyond the arc. The Seahawks are shooting only 39.1 percent from the field this season, including 29.2 percent from 3-point range. They're also struggling from the foul line at a 64.7 percent connect rate. Keith Rendleman is the lone double-figure scorer at 14.8 ppg and is also leading the team with 9.3 rpg. Tanner Milson (8.8 ppg), Craig Ponder (6.9 ppg) and Cedrick Williams (6.2 ppg) are key contributors to a team that averages only 56.4 ppg, which coming into this week was ranked 331st out of 345 Division I teams.
The Wildcats won last year's meeting by a tight 70-67 count. Kuhlman hit a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to seal the outcome. The Wildcats may look for another big effort from long range. They outscored the Seahawks, 21-0 from beyond the arc last year and held UNCW to just three attempts from downtown in the victory. Kuhlman finished with 21 points and seven rebounds and could play a big role again for the Wildcats, who are clearly the superior team in this matchup.
