Final Score: Coastal Charlotte 79, Charlotte 75 (2OT)
Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Desmond Holloway scored a game-high 25 points as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defeated the Charlotte 49ers, 79-75, in double-overtime in the final round of the Charleston Classic at Carolina First Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for the Chanticleers (4-2) were Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood with 17 and 15 points, respectively, in the team's second straight victory.
The 49ers (2-3) were paced by Shamari Spears who led four in double figures with his 22 points, followed by Derrio Green with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. An'Juan Wilderness accounted for 15 points and eight boards and Chris Braswell a double-double consisting of 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as the squad lost for the second time in the last three outings.
Coastal Carolina had a lot of trouble finding the mark from the floor in the first half, the team shooting just 34.8 percent from the field, which is why the Chanticleers found themselves down by eight points at the break, 32-24.
In the second half it was time for Charlotte to struggle, making a total of just six field goals in the frame. However, thanks to 16-of-19 at the free- throw line the 49ers were able to keep the game close. A pair of free throws by Green with less than 20 seconds to play in regulation put Charlotte ahead by three at 62-59, but a three-pointer by Greenwood for the Chanticleers sent the meeting into overtime.
During the first bonus session both squads played a bit tentative, scoring a mere six points each and this time it was a three-pointer by Charlotte that locked the game at 68-68 as they headed to a second extra period.
Green knocked down a couple of free throws in the second overtime to give the 49ers a 75-74 edge, but from there Coastal Carolina closed out with several made free throws of its own to claim the four-point win.
In a game that saw eight ties and 11 lead changes, Charlotte failed to overcome 18 turnovers and hold on to a 14-point lead it built in the first half.
