Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - David Kool led all scorers with 26 points, as Western Michigan held on for a 69-60 win over Central Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.
Flenard Whitfield added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Western Michigan (18-14), which earned a 75-73 victory over Bowling Green in the first round on Sunday. The Broncos, who will play Akron in the semifinals on Friday, have won five of their last seven games overall. David Brown and Donald Lawson ended with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
WMU, which improved to 79-45 over Central Michigan in the all-time series, won this tournament just once, back in 2004.
Robbie Harman made four three-pointers and ended with a team-best 20 points for Central Michigan (15-15), which downed Western Michigan on February 27. Jordan Bitzer finished with 15 points nd Amir Rashid donated 14 points off the bench.
Central Michigan led 31-22 at the break and extended its advantage to 14, 47-33 after Rashid made a layup with 13:42 to play.
Then with the Chippewas up 54-49 with 6:27 left, a 15-4 run gave WMU the lead and essentially put the game away. Mike Douglas got the spurt started with a trey and Kool finished it off with a pair from the free-throw line, making it a 64-58 game with 1:09 to play.
Tied at 17 with 7:16 left in the opening half, Harman hit back-to-back three- pointers as part of a 10-0 run to give Central Michigan a 27-17 lead with 3:57 remaining. The Chippewas settled for a 31-22 advantage heading into the locker room.

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Steve McNees went 4-for-4 from three-point range and finished with a team-high 18 points, as Akron prevailed for a 97-89 double-overtime win over Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Mid- American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.
Anthony "Humpty" Hitchens chipped in with 16 points, while Zeke Marshall ended with 13 points, nine rebounds and six blocks for Akron (23-9), which advanceD to play Western Michigan in the semifinals on Friday.
Akron, the reigning MAC Tournament champions, dropped a 74-61 decision to Kent State in its regular-season finale, but still finished with a first-round bye.
Carlos Medlock ended with a career-high 42 points to go along with eight rebounds for Eastern Michigan (17-15), which earned a 65-59 victory over Northern Illinois in the first round of the MAC tourney. Brandon Bowdry went for 21 points and 14 rebounds before getting ejected late in the second overtime for throwing an elbow and receiving a flagrant foul.
Hitchens buried a three to start the second overtime, and with the aid of some poor EMU shooting, the Akron lead ballooned to seven, 88-81, after Marshall made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 55 seconds left.
With frustration setting in for Eastern Michigan, Bowdry was given a flagrant foul for throwing an elbow with 25 seconds to go and Eagles head coach Charles Ramsey was ejected after picking up his second technical. Darryl Roberts stepped up and made 3-of-4 free throws to ice the game.
Ahead 40-32 at the break, Marshall scored six straight points to start the second half to put Akron up 46-32 and the Zips played the front-runner until late in the stanza.
Trailing 67-61 with nearly three minutes to play, Medlock made a pair of free throws and later sank a triple to make it a three-point game. Following a Jimmy Conyers turnover and putback layup by Bowdry that got EMU to within a point, Medlock hit a corner three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead 71-69 with 58 seconds to play. However, the lead was short-lived as Brett McKnight's layup tied things with 38 ticks left.
Eastern Michigan had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but Jay Higgins' long jumper came up short and Marshall blocked Justin Dobbins' follow-up attempt and the game went into overtime.
In the first OT and the game tied at 78, Higgins made a corner three with eight seconds left to put EMU in front, but with no timeouts remaining, McNees drove the length of the floor and hit a fadeaway triple with under a second to go to force another extra period.
Tied at 31 with 3:12 remaining in the first half, Akron finished out the stanza with a strong 9-1 run. Hitchens made a pair of layups before Conyers added a layup, then beat the buzzer with a trey to give the Zips a 40-32 edge heading into the locker room.
Final Score: Ohio University 81, Kent State 64
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Armon Bassett poured in a game-high 38 points to lead the ninth-seeded Ohio University Bobcats to an 81-64 upset over the top-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes in a quarterfinal matchup of the Mid- American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.
DeVaughn Washington added 19 points and collected nine rebounds in the win for Ohio (19-14).
Chris Singletary scored 19 points to lead the way for Kent State (23-9), while Anthony Simpson and Rodriquez Sherman chipped in 12 points apiece in a losing effort.
The Golden Flashes were held to a woeful 25.0 percent shooting from the floor during the opening stanza, allowing Ohio to take a commanding 40-24 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bobcats used a 22-of-27 effort from the charity stripe to secure the 17-point victory.
The Bobcats advance to the semifinals and will play the winner of Buffalo/Miami-Ohio on Friday night.
