Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as third-ranked Connecticut shook off some early rust to defeat Army, 68-54, in its home opener at the Hartford Civic Center.
Gay also converted 9-of-11 from the charity stripe and had five steals for the Huskies (5-0), who shot just 41.5 percent from the floor but held a 41-26 rebounding advantage.
Rashad Anderson added 16 points off the bench and the frontcourt duo of Josh Boone and Hilton Armstrong each scored 10 points in the victory.
Jarell Brown tallied a game-high 26 points for the Cadets (2-3), who committed 19 turnovers and shot 40 percent from the floor.
Army grabbed an early 14-11 advantage as the Huskies began 4-of-14 from the floor, and a 6-of-8 start from behind the arc kept the Cadets in front 20-16 late in the first half.
"We came out lackadaisical, not defending," Anderson said. "Things like this happen when you come out not ready to play. We just didn't come ready to play, bottom line. We didn't defend the perimeter tonight."
The slumbering Huskies finally awoke in the last 6:30 of the stanza, going on a 19-7 spurt to take a 35-27 halftime lead. Anderson connected on three treys in the final 2:12, including one with three seconds to go, and ended with 14 points in 12 minutes of action.
Brown paced Army with 14 points propelled by 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
Connecticut, though, broke the game open early in the second half, scoring the first nine points to take a 44-27 lead. Boone's three-point play to open the stanza sparked the run.
The Huskies coasted the rest of the way, never giving up their double-digit advantage. The lead swelled to 18 on Gay's free throw with just under 16 minutes remaining and Army never got closer than 10 points again.
The Huskies have won all 20 home openers under head coach Jim Calhoun. The last time Connecticut lost a home opener was December 7, 1982 when the Huskies fell to Fairfield 98-81...UConn is now 7-3 all-time versus Army.
