GAME NOTES: The Hoops for Hope Classic shifts to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico as the Jacksonville Jaguars tangle with the Rider Broncs at the Puerto Vallarta International Convention Center.
Jacksonville played two games on the road to begin the Classic facing Missouri State and Arkansas-Little Rock. The Dolphins split those two games, topping the Bears 64-58 before falling to the Trojans 78-56. Overall Jacksonville is 2-3 this season with road losses to Georgia (68-62) and Miami-Florida (73-57) also on the docket. In the second game in Puerto Vallarta, the Dolphins will face Milwaukee Saturday.
The Broncs have yet to capture a victory in the event with losses to South Carolina (88-70) and SMU (83-70) tacked on to its ledger. Both of those losses came on the road after the Broncs went 2-1 in a three-game homestand to open the season. Milwaukee will also be Rider's next opponent although the Broncs will wait until Sunday for that matchup.
During an in-season tournament during the 1958-59 season (Quantico Tournament) Jacksonville put down Rider 77-72 in the only other meeting between these programs.
The Dolphins were no match for Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday. Jacksonville shot just 35.1 percent from the floor in the game and were outscored 21-6 from beyond the arc. Jacksonville also suffered a 45-32 deficit on the boards while turning the ball over 19 times. Both Javon Dawson and Jarvis Hay wood paced the squad with 14 points.
No player for Jacksonville is scoring in double figures this season. However five different players are scoring at least 6.8 points a contest. Despite that sort of balance the Dolphins are only putting in 63.4 points a game while shooting 42.4 percent from the floor. On the defensive end Jacksonville is allowing 64.0 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting. Haywood (9.8 ppg) is the lead scorer and has done so despite playing only 19 minutes per game. Haywood has been able to do so by shooting efficiently (51.6 FG percentage). Keith McDougald (9.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg) is also putting in more than nine points per game but can not boast the same sort of efficiency as Haywood. The junior guard is connecting on just 29.8 percent of his shots from the floor. Glenn Powell (6.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Kordario Fleming (6.0 ppg,, 5.4 rpg) lead the team's rebounding efforts.
Rider ran into a hot-shooting SMU squad in its loss to the Mustangs on Wednesday. SMU to hit on 57.1 percent of its shots in the game including 8- of-11 from 3-point range while Rider hit on only 41.5 percent of its field goal attempts. Rider did managed to hit nine triples but needed 28 shots to do so. The Broncs were also on the short end in rebounds (32-23). Anthony Myles was the top scorer with 19 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds.
The Broncs have a negative scoring differential this season but not by a wide margin (-1). The Broncs come in at 43.1 percent while their foes hit on 41.4 percent. Nurideen Lindsey (18.0 ppg) is the top scorer on the roster and has been doing so while shooting at an impressive 56.6 percent on field goal attempts. Myles (12.6 ppg) is capable of a double-figure effort on a nightly basis as well. Jonathan Thompson (10.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.6 apg) fills the stat sheet and fills the distributor role, while Danny Stewart (9.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg) is the top rebounder.
The beginnings of this event have led to unfortunate results for both of these squads. The Dolphins have more balance on offense but no go-to scorer, while the Broncs have more prolific options. Rider will lean on the trio of Lindsey, Myles and Thompson to put up enough points to reverse its recent fortunes.
