NCAA Game Summary - North Texas at Denver
(Sunday, February 26th)
Final Score: Denver 64, North Texas 52
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Royce O'Neale registered 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals as he helped guide Denver to a 64-52 win over North Texas in Sun Belt Conference action at Magness Arena.
Leading the way in the scoring department for the Pioneers (21-8, 11-5 SBC) were Chris Udofia and Brian Stafford with 15 points apiece, followed by Brett Olson with 10 points as the hosts closed the regular season on a four-game win streak.
The Mean Green (16-13, 9-7) were paced by Brandan Walton with 13 points and Alzee Williams 10, while Tony Mitchell contributed nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the team bowed for the second time in the final three outings.
Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the first half, Denver connecting on just 31.3 percent from the field and UNT 32.1 percent, but with the visitors failing to get to the free-throw line even once through the first 20 minutes, that allowed the Pioneers to post a 27-20 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Mean Green shot 52.4 percent from the floor, but it was still not enough as Denver secured the double-digit win.
North Texas easily won the rebounding battle, 41-29, but turning the ball over 20 times was too much for the visitors.
The Pioneers, who have set a school record with 21 wins, are now set as the third seed for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Despite the loss, UNT still receives a bye through to the quarterfinals of the event where it will clash with Louisiana.
