Bowling Green, KY (Sports Network) - T.J. Price nailed a three pointer with two seconds remaining to lift the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to a 79-76 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves in a Sun Belt Conference thriller at E.A. Diddle Arena.
George Fant paced Western Kentucky (10-18, 6-9 Sun Belt) with 19 points while Derrick Gordon put in 16 and Teeng Akol and Kahlil McDonald each added 14 points. The Hilltoppers had lost three of four entering play.
Malcoln Kirkland had a game-high 22 points, Darion Griswald put in 15 and Trey Finn added 14 for Arkansas State (12-18, 6-10) which had won back-to-back games entering the game. Brandon Peterson ripped down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Arkansas State held a 38-34 advantage at halftime by knocking down 14-of-29 shots from the floor while Western Kentucky hit on 14-of-24. The Red Wolves held the lead due to a 7-3 edge from the free throw line.
Western Kentucky led 76-72 with 42 seconds left on the clock after a Gordon layup but then allowed the Red Wolves to score four straight points from the charity stripe to tie the game at 76-76 with 17 seconds remaining. On the Hilltoppers' next possession Price connected on his game winner and Western Kentucky escaped after a a desperation heave from Edward Townsel was off the mark.
