New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Darian Norris' layup with 25 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in San Diego's 66-65 triumph over the Alcorn State Braves as part of the Hoops for Hope Classic at Fogelman Arena.
Norris finished with 15 points for the Toreros (4-1), who opened the event with an eight-point win over New Orleans on Friday. They'll finish up play in this even on Sunday against host Tulane. Johnny Dee led all scorers with 18 points in the victory, while Chris Manresa scored 10 and pulled down a game- high nine rebounds.
This marked the fourth straight setback for the Braves (1-4), who lost their first-round matchup against Tulane by 42 points on Friday. They'll close out the tournament against New Orleans on Sunday. Chris Brand paced four Braves in double figures with 16 points, six boards and a pair of blocks in a losing effort.
San Diego jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the opening frame. The Braves shot just 37 percent, but they made 5-of-10 threes in the opening 20 minutes.
Alcorn State hung around behind a 57.7-percent shooting effort from the floor in the second stanza. They took a 65-64 lead on JaMichael Hawkins' layup with just under a minute to play, but he missed a potential game-winner from close range with 12 seconds to play. Hawkins grabbed his own miss and Twann Oakley had a look a three-pointer as time expired, but his shot was off the mark.
