NCAA Game Summary - Jacksonville at S-M-U
(Saturday, March 19th)
Final Score: SMU 63, Jacksonville 62
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Papa Dia in the final seconds pushed the SMU Mustangs to a narrow 63-62 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Moody Coliseum.
Dia finished the afternoon with a game-high 24 points, although he shot just 4-of-9 at the charity stripe for the Mustangs (19-14). Also scoring in double figures for the hosts was Jeremiah Samarrippas with 16 points as he converted all three of his three-point tries and 6-of-8 from the floor overall.
The Dolphins (20-12) were paced by Travis Cohn who dropped in 22 points on 8- of-12 shooting from the floor, followed by Keith McDougald and Delwan Graham with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Dolphins were out of their element in the first half as they shot only 26.9 percent from the floor and missed all seven chances behind the three- point line, leaving the visitors to a 36-22 deficit at the break. The Ponies managed to put some distance between themselves and Jacksonville by knocking down an incredible 75 percent from the field.
In the second half SMU dipped to 50 percent accuracy from the floor and that was enough to allow the Dolphins to battle back with their stellar 8-of-11 effort beyond the arc. A three-pointer by Cohn with four seconds remaining put Jacksonville on top by a score of 62-61, setting the scene for Dia's successful turns at the charity stripe shortly thereafter.
SMU managed to fall into the win column despite shooting just 9-of-16 at the free-throw line, capturing a mere six offensive rebounds and turning the ball over 20 times on the day.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Monday night during the quarterfinals of the tournament against the Northern Iowa Panthers
