Beasley leads Kansas State past Western Illinois
Manhattan, KS (Sports Network) - Michael Beasley scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as 22nd-ranked Kansas State defeated Western Illinois, 77-64, at Bramlage Coliseum.
Beasley made 10-of-16 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free throw line for the Wildcats (3-0). Bill Walker chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jacob Pullen added 10 points.
Western Illinois (1-2) was led by David Jackson, who scored 12 points as the Leathernecks have lost two of three to start the season. David Nurse had 11 points, while David Dubois contributed 10.
Kansas State got out of the gate quick, taking a 16-5 lead following a bucket by Clent Stewart 6:50 into the contest. However, Western Illinois made it a one-point game with 1:25 left in the first half after a jumper by Dubois. The Wildcats got a three pointer from Beasley with 45 second left and took a 31-27 lead into the intermission.
"We got our guards and ball handlers in foul trouble and that hurt us," Western Illinois head coach Derek Thomas said. "Then Beasley started inflicting his will."
The Wildcats continued to hold the Leathernecks at arms length for the first 10 minutes of the second half, then took a 63-54 lead with 5:57 remaining following a basket by Beasley. Western Illinois wasn't able cut into the deficit the rest of the way and Kansas State made it a 74-62 game after Fred Brown knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:35 remaining.
"We�ve got to get better," Kansas State head coach Frank Martin said. "It�s plain and simple. It�s three games into this thing, there�s 27 more to play. We�ve got a lot of time to continue to improve, continue to get better."
Kansas State completed a three-game homestand, winning all three games and will now head to Orlando, Florida, to play George Mason on November 22 in the Old Spice Classic...The Wildcats are now 2-0 all time versus Western Illinois with the first matchup taking place in 1982.
