Virginia tops TCU in 15; Ole Miss ousts Texas Tech in 9th

Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - In a game that tied a College World Series record for innings played, Daniel Pinero's sacrifice fly lifted the Virginia Cavaliers to a 3-2 win over the TCU Horned Frogs in 15 frames.

Nate Irving poked a double out to left to begin the 15th, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Cogswell before Pinero sent the winning sac fly to center.

Virginia is now one win away from the three-game set to decide a champion, while TCU is sent to the loser's bracket to face Ole Miss, which had its own walkoff win earlier in the day.

Artie Lewicki got the win to cap eight innings of scoreless relief for the Cavs. Cogswell finished with three hits and two runs and Mike Papi had an RBI in the win.

Trey Teakell took the loss after allowing a run over 2 2/3 innings of relief for TCU. Kyle Bacak delivered three hits and Dylan Fitzgerald supplied an RBI in the setback.

Virginia opened the scoring in the first on a throwing error from Fitzgerald, but the Horned Frogs plated two in the second before Papi's RBI groundout tied the game at 2-2 after five innings.

Earlier, John Gatlin's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Ole Miss to a 2-1 win over Texas Tech.

The result kept the Rebels alive in the double-elimination tournament and ousted the Red Raiders, who were appearing in the College World Series for the first time.

Texas Tech had rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth on a Anthony Lyons' pinch-hit sacrifice fly. Pinch-runner Zach Davis scored on the play after stealing second and third base.

The game was scoreless until Holt Perdzock's pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh inning.
