=== Korea wins women's 3,000 meter relay ===
Torino, Italy (Sports Network) - Korea won the women's 3,000-meter relay on
Wednesday for its seventh short track speedskating medal at the Torino
Korea beat out Canada for the gold with a time of four minutes, 17.040 seconds.
Canada was 0.296 behind and China crossed the line third, but was disqualified
-- giving Italy an unexpected bronze medal in the four-team final.
The way the teams finished originally, before China's disqualification, is the
same way they finished in World Cup competition.
Korea thrives at speedskating disciplines -- all eight of its Torino medals
have come in short or long track events -- but especially over long distances.
The team of Byun Chun-Sa, Choi Eun-Kyung, Jeon Da-Hye, Jin Sun-Yu and Kang Yun-
Mi took the lead for good with three laps remaining in what is really a
scramble of a race where competitors can push their teammates when changing up
at the end of a lap.
Canada entered the race as the only country to medal in the women's relay in
each of the last four Olympics, and is now the only one to do it five times.
The four-woman American team of Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick, Maria Garcia,
Caroline Hallisey and Hyo-Jung Kim won the "B Final" and placed fourth overall,
by way of China's disqualification from the "A Final".
Many of the skaters competed in the preliminary heats for the women's 1,000m
earlier in the night. Korea's Jin had the fastest time out of the 16 qualifiers
at one minute, 31.504 seconds.
Skating in the same heat, Italy's Arianna Fontana, a member of the bronze medal
winning relay team, qualified second, just 0.529 slower than Jin.
Both Americans skaters, Hyo-Jung Kim and Kimberly Derrick, also qualified for
Saturday's quarterfinals. Kim and Derrick skated in the relay final as well.
