Torino, Italy (Sports Network) - Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands won the
gold medal in women's 1,000 meter speedskating Sunday at Oval Lingotto.
Timmer captured the gold with a time of one minute, 16.05 seconds. Ranked
seventh in the World Cup standings, Timmer was disqualified from the 500 meter
event with a controversial false start.
"I have a revengeful feeling after my disqualification," said the new champion
before the event.
This was Timmer's first Olympic gold medal after an eight-year wait. In 1998
she won gold in this event and the 1,500m.
"It was incredible," said Timmer. "I strongly hoped to get to the podium. It
was like being in a movie."
Winning the silver medal was Canada's Cindy Klassen with a time of one minute,
16.09 seconds. She became the first Canadian female to win three medals in a

Coming away with the bronze medal was Anni Friesinger of Germany. Friesinger is
leading the current World Cup standings.
Jennifer Rodriguez was the top American in 10th place, while defending Olympic
1,000 meter gold medal winner Chris Witty of the U.S. finished 27th.
