=== Davis wins gold in 1,000m; Cheek takes silver ===

Torino, Italy (Sports Network) - The United States took gold and silver in
the men's 1,000 meter speedskating event at the Winter Olympics, as Shani Davis
came in first and Joey Cheek finished second at the Oval Lingotto.

Davis, the world record holder at this distance, set the pace with a time of
one minute, 8.89 seconds to earn his first-ever Olympic medal. Cheek finished
just 0.27 seconds behind for his second medal of the Games.

"I always wanted to be on the Olympic medal dias," said Davis, who is the first
black athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games. "It's a
great feeling. It's a reward for all the hard work I have done, I don't think I
 will have any sleep tonight."

Erben Wennemars won the bronze for the Netherlands with a time of 1:09.32.

The U.S. men's speedskating team has been terrific here in Torino, winning gold
in all three individual events contested so far. Cheek won the 500 meters and
Chad Hedrick claimed gold in the 5,000.

"Our team is the best it's ever been and I think we are showing that," said
 Cheek.

Hedrick, who finished sixth, raced in the fourth pairing and his time of
1:09.45 led the event until Davis went in the 20th group. This is not the best
distance for Hedrick, who is gearing up for the 1,500 meter event on Wednesday.

"Today was a day for me to create my speed so when I go out for the 1,500 meter
on Wednesday, I can get my speed early," said Hedrick.

Fellow American Casey FitzRandolph placed ninth with a time of 1:09.59.

Canada's Jeremy Wotherspoon, silver medalist in the 500 meters at the 1998
Nagano Games, ended in 11th with a time of 1:09.76.
