Kings reward Voynov with 6-year deal
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Kings re-upped pending restricted free agent defenseman Slava Voynov with a six-year contract on Tuesday.
No financial terms were disclosed, but several outlets report it is worth $25 million. It's a significant increase in compensation, as the native of Russia made only $787,000 per season over the two years of his initial NHL deal.
The 23-year-old totaled 19 assists and 25 points while participating in all 48 regular-season games during his sophomore campaign, then put together an impressive performance as Los Angeles fell short in defending its Stanley Cup title.
Voynov was co-leader on the club with six goals and 13 points in 18 postseason contests, setting new single-season franchise playoff records for total goals scored by a defenseman and game-winning tallies.
Over 102 NHL appearances for the Kings, the second-round draft pick in 2008 and three-time medalist at the World Junior Championships has tallied 14 goals and 45 points.
