Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders in exchange for prospect Shane Harper and a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
The Flyers now own the rights to Streit, who is a pending unrestricted free agent. Philadelphia will have an opportunity to sign him to a new deal before he hits the free agent market on July 5.
"Mark is a player we would have had interest in on July 5th," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "We now have exclusive negotiating rights and we are hopeful that we can get an agreement in place prior to him becoming an unrestricted free agent."
Streit recorded six goals and 21 assists while appearing in all 48 games for the Islanders this past season. He added two goals and three assists in six playoff games.
He has 65 goals and 223 assists in 491 career games in parts of eight seasons with the Islanders and Montreal Canadiens. With the exception of the 2010-11 season, which Streit missed after suffering an injury in training camp, he has missed just 15 games over the course of his NHL career.
Harper registered 20 goals and 21 assists in 143 games with the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, over parts of four seasons.
