(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will head south this week for a
Sunshine State battle with the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins are reeling a bit coming in after losing tight end Dustin Keller
for the season with a serious right knee injury suffered in the team's 24-17
setback to the Houston Texans on Saturday.
As Keller tried to make a grab midway through the second quarter, Houston
rookie safety D.J. Swearinger dove in low to break up the play and made direct
contact with his helmet against Keller's right knee, tearing the veteran's
ACL, PCL and MCL and also dislocating his kneecap.
Keller, 28, remained on the ground in obvious pain before being carted to the
"Certainly he presented challenges for defenses and also some opportunities
for us," Miami offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said when discussing
Keller's injury. "I feel like we have some talented guys behind him that will
have to step up, I prefer not to change what we do necessarily."
Second-year Miami QB Ryan Tannehill completed 10-of-15 passes for 141 yards
and a touchdown against the Texans while backup Matt Moore was a dismal 3-
for-11 for 15 yards.
The Dolphins also made news this week by releasing veteran cornerback Richard
Marshall signed a three-year, $16 million contract in March 2012 and was set
to make $4.55 million in base salary this season. The 28-year-old played in
just four games last season due to a back injury, however.
"There are a variety of issues when you are going to make a tough decision
like that, and there is competition at every position," Dolphins defensive
coordinator Kevin Coyle said. "We've been studying the competition since the
spring, and we felt as if it was the best interests in the team."
The Bucs, meanwhile, suffered their second straight preseason loss against Tom
Brady and the New England Patriots last Friday, falling 25-21.
Rookie signal caller Mike Glennon finished 12-of-22 for 121 yards, two scores
and one interception for the Buccaneers, who rallied from an 18-7 deficit but
Mike James racked up a game-best 81 yards on 15 carries, while Kevin Ogletree
and David Douglas were beneficiaries of Glennon scoring passes in defeat.
The Bucs are the Dolphins' most common preseason opponent, having faced Miami
27 times with the Fish holding a 16-11 advantage in the series.
