Former NFL player Douglas arrested

Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Former NFL player and TV analyst Hugh Douglas was arrested after police say he assaulted his girlfriend over the weekend.

According to a police report, Douglas is accused of grabbing his girlfriend by the neck and slamming her against the wall several times while he carried her from the elevator to their Hartford hotel room early Sunday morning.

Douglas was charged with second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault. He was arraigned Tuesday and is due back in court Oct. 21.

The former defensive end denies assaulting the woman, telling police red marks on her neck were from "rough sex" and he didn't know why she had a bump on her head.

Police said they were called to the hotel after a woman inquired at the front desk if there were cameras in the hotel's hallways, saying she had just been assaulted.

Douglas and his girlfriend both told police they had been arguing. The woman told police she blacked out during the alleged assault because she couldn't breathe.

Douglas, 42, played six of his 10 NFL seasons with the Eagles and still lives near Philadelphia. He also played for the Jets and Jaguars.

He was fired last month by ESPN from his job as a panelist on "Numbers Never Lie" after reportedly using racial slurs against host Michael Smith during a National Association of Black Journalists convention in Orlando, Fla.
