Insight: Liriano gave up two runs or less in each of his previous six starts and hadn't allowed more than three since May 25. The left-hander is 3-10 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP, but he also has 127 Ks in 118 1/3 innings.

Insight: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter Dejan Kovacevic suggested that Liriano (1-6, 4.60 ERA) could be placed on the disabled list. It's bad news for a Pittsburgh rotation already without one of its best starters (Gerrit Cole was placed on the DL Sunday with shoulder fatigue).

Insight: Liriano appeared to be in some discomfort and left after stretching and throwing a few warm-up pitches. Liriano was excellent last season, going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP, but this year he's 1-6 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

Insight: Liriano has thrown 100+ pitches in each of the last two starts without making it through the sixth inning. The left-hander walked 3.52 batters per nine innings last year but has issued 4.67 free passes per nine in 2014. He hasn't thrown more than 5 2/3 innings in a start since May 14 and now has a 4.54 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and a 73/36 K/BB in 69 1/3 innings.

Insight: Liriano hasn't been the same pitcher he was in 2013. His BB/9 is up from 3.52 to 4.02 and he's allowed seven homers in 53 2/3 innings after giving up just nine in 161 innings last season. He's 0-4 with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.

Insight: Stolmy Pimentel relieved Liriano in the third inning. Despite a respectable 3.97 ERA in six starts, Liriano is still winless on the season. Consider him day-to-day.

Description: Pirates starter Francisco Liriano took a no decision Monday against the Cubs despite throwing six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts.
Insight: Jeff Samardzija was fantastic for the other side and the Pirates ended up winning 1-0 in 10 innings. Monday's results are exactly what we want to see from Liriano early in the season. He had a 3.02 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 163 Ks in 161 innings in 2013 but put up an ERA above five in three of the previous four years.

Insight: It sounds like he may have sprained his ankle. For the most part, Liriano has looked pretty good this spring. In four appearances, he owns a 2.31 ERA with ten strikeouts and four walks.

Insight: He'll get the nod March 31st against the Cubs. Liriano was a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners last season. His 3.02 ERA over 161 innings was his first sub-five ERA since 2010.

Insight: While we're not expecting Clint Hurdle to pull a Joe Maddon, Cole will probably be on a pretty short leash. Liriano is 1-0 this postseason with a 2.08 ERA in two starts.

Insight: Liriano has proved to be a fantastic pickup for the Pirates after several erratic seasons for the Twins over the last few years. He's 16-7 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP and has struck out 155 batters in 156 innings.

Insight: It's looking like that start will be the do-or-die Wild Card game rather than Game 1 of the Division Series. In order to win the division, Pittsburgh needs to gain two games on St. Louis in the next week and a half.
